    The emerald hummingbird is a truly remarkable species of hummingbird found in South America. They are known for their vibrant emerald green plumage and their incredibly fast wing beats that allow them to hover in place while feeding on nectar. But what makes the emerald hummingbird truly special compared to other hummingbird species? Here we will explore some of the unique traits and abilities that set this hummingbird apart.

    Unparalleled Agility in Flight

    Of all the hummingbird species, the emerald hummingbird has the fastest wing beat and is able to achieve the highest frequency of wing oscillations. Their wings can beat up to an astonishing 80 times per second! This allows them to demonstrate incredible agility and precision in flight. They can instantly change direction, speed, and orientation, allowing them to adeptly visit many flowers in quick succession. The nest is built in the shape of a thick cup with a ‘tail’ of decorative fibers trailing below to aid camouflage. Thick walls and a lined interior provide insulation. Their metabolic rate can plunge up to 98% while torpid, allowing them to conserve energy. Body temperature drops from around 105°F to as low as 50°F, which is among the lowest recorded torpor temperatures for any hummingbird. The anatomy of their leg muscles allows them to swiftly recover from this state once daylight returns. Torpor use gives them a critical energy-saving advantage in harsh conditions that other species lack.

    Important Pollination Services

    Due to their unique adaptations, emerald hummingbirds serve as critical pollinators for many high-altitude plants. As they dart from flower to flower accessing nectar, pollen grains stick to their heads and are transferred to the next flower. Some species of plants even rely exclusively on the emerald hummingbird for pollination. Their extinction could put many fragile alpine ecosystems at risk. Scientists believe co-evolution between the emerald hummingbird and specialized high-altitude flowers has occurred.
